Kai Havertz Admits He And Timo Werner Teased Each Other Over Bad Press

Chelsea’s Kai Havertz and Timo Werner had brilliant responses to criticism throughout their debut seasons at Stamford Bridge.

The two young Germans were signed to some expectation and cost last summer by former boss Frank Lampard.

Havertz arrived at Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen for a club record fee having harnessed the reputation as one of the most promising youngsters in European football.

Meanwhile, Werner had become a prolific goalscorer with RB Leipzig in both the Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League before his move to Stamford Bridge.

Neither quite managed to live up to expectations though; Havertz netting just nine goals in all competitions whilst Werner himself only managed to score 12.

The two earned a fair amount of criticism throughout their first campaigns in west London but Havertz has revealed that the two international teammates became accustomed to having a joke at each other’s expense despite the headlines sometimes being somewhat difficult to read.

Talking to German outlet Suddeutsche Zeitung, he said: “Timo Werner and I sometimes teased each other with the [unflattering] headlines.

“But when you sit at home, it is not that fun anymore.”

Despite their respective difficulties, Havertz rounded off the season in the best possible way for Chelsea by scoring the winning goal in the UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City.

He will hope to continue that on the international stage as Germany get their Euro 2020 campaign underway against France this evening in Munich.

Joachim Low’s men then face another tough assignment as they take on reigning European champions Portugal before concluding the group stages against Hungary.
